Sergio Reguilon has lauded Toby Alderweireld after the former Tottenham Hotspur defender created history by helping Royal Antwerp win the Belgian title for the first time in 66 years on Sunday.
Royal Antwerp, Genk and Union Saint-Gilloise all were in with a chance of becoming champions on the final day of the season, in stoppage-time, the title was heading to the team owned by Brighton chairman, Tony Bloom – Union Saint-Gilloise. That’s when Toby Alderweireld, away at Genk, stepped up and fired the ball into the top right-hand corner from the edge of the area to hand his boyhood club their first title in over half a century.
It was, as European Football expert Collin Millar posted on his Twitter, ‘an all-time great football moment’, which Alderweireld tried to come to terms with himself on Instagram. In the comments section of his post, he was praised by former teammates, including Jan Vertonghen being left in shock and Sergio Reguilon simply telling him ‘what a player’.
It has been a crazy few days for players with Tottenham blood, after Bryan Gil, still on the club’s books, and Erik Lamela helping Sevilla win the Europa League at the expense of Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Joe Hart is still racking up trophies in Scotland with Celtic, alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers, who won the treble this season under Ange Postecoglou – he is now Tottenham bound.
Then there is the forgotten man Tanguy Ndombele, who has a winner’s medal to his name after helping Napoli to the Serie A title for the first time in 30 years.

Age is just a number for Alderweireld
The 34-year-old was a popular player during his days in north London, an ice-cool defender, who read the game well and was very reliable.
He played a huge part in Tottenham’s rise under Mauricio Pochettino and reaching the Champions League final.
But he parted ways with Spurs in 2021, headed to Qatar and then returned to his homeland where he created the greatest moment in his career.
