Michael Ball wants to see Everton make a move for Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

Former Everton defender Michael Ball has told the Liverpool Echo that he thinks the Toffees should make an ambitious move to land Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Aguero, 28, has established himself as one of the greatest strikers in Premier League history over the years, smashing 113 goals in in 168 league appearances for the club.

Add in the famous title-winning goal against Queens Park Rangers in 2012 and Aguero has become an Etihad Stadium hero, winning two league titles since arriving from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

His record of 15 goals in 25 appearances this season is far from underwhelming, but Aguero has not only had to deal with disciplinary issues this season, but now has Gabriel Jesus to contend with.

City’s new Brazilian striker has hit three goals in his two league starts for the club since arriving from Palmeiras in January, and his rise to prominence has seen Aguero drop to the bench, prompting questions over his future.

The Daily Mail recently reported that Aguero is expected to stay at the Etihad Stadium, but one former City defender is urging a Premier League rival to move for the Argentinian international.

Michael Ball played for both Manchester City and Everton, and has told the Liverpool Echo that he would love to see the Toffees make an audacious move for Aguero given the funding at their disposal from shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

Ball thinks that Everton can learn from City’s mistakes over the years by going straight for an elite talent, and thinks that he would not only convince Romelu Lukaku to stay at Goodison Park, but form a devastating partnership with the Belgian hitman.

“When players of Aguero’s quality are not getting the quantity of matches they want we should try to snap them up,” said Ball. “We should learn from the mistakes City made in their transitional period when they came into a lot of money. We can look to our neighbours, look at the mistakes they made and learn from them. City brought players in when I was there like Robinho and Elano, players designed to get them to a certain point. Then they had to go again, and then again.”

“It costs a lot of money but you have to dream, you have to attract that calibre of player – and once you have one or two of them the rest will follow. It costs a lot of money and you have to swallow a big hit. Whether we can sustain that I don’t know, but if we do that then convinces other players like Romelu Lukaku to stick around and become club legends.”

“Aguero has come onto the pitch for the last few minutes recently and had a chance straightaway. He is world class and any team would want him. So why not stick our name in the hat and give it a right good go? Lukaku would clearly relish a strike partner. Although when Rom believes in himself he doesn’t need anyone!” he added.

If City did decide to sell Aguero at the end of the season, then he would no doubt have offers from Champions League clubs like Atletico, Real Madrid or Paris Saint-Germain, or even huge clubs like Inter Milan looking to make a big splash, meaning a move to Everton seems almost impossible – but Ball is along the right lines in that Everton have money to spend and could look to splash it on a big-name addition to boost Ronald Koeman’s squad this summer.
