Tottenham Hotspur recalled Serge Aurier to the staring line up at the weekend.
It was a decision which made sense, Spurs were out of makeshift options at right-back, it was time to put some trust in the Ivorian.
Aurier responded well, keeping a clean sheet in a 4-0 victory against Crystal Palace.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino praised Aurier after the win.
He was quoted by Football London: “Now he needs to show and be consistent. It’s not only one game and the second game the focus and intensity start to drop.”
The first step with this begins with Pochettino.
Aurier can only start to perform consistently if he is selected on a consistent basis.
This was, as Pochettino points out, just one game, and he absolutely needs to start this week in the Champions League.
Tottenham travel to face Olympiakos and it will be a tricky fixture against the in form Greek side. Aurier’s experience can be vital.
The temptation for Pochettino will be, that is Aurier disappoints, he should revert straight back to picking Kyle Walker-Peters or Juan Foyth when fit again.
Pochettino needs to stick with Aurier for a run of fixtures now, even if he has a shaky moment.
If he doesn’t get a real run in the starting line up, then Aurier has little chance of ever showing what he is capable of. This is a chance for him to finally repay Spurs and show the £23 million they spent on him was justified.
