Nile John has completed a loan move to League One side Charlton Athletic until the end of the season from Tottenham. Starring for the club’s 23’s, it is his first loan move away – and plenty have reacted, including Serge Aurier.

John, 18, made his senior debut for Spurs last season in the Europa League under Jose Mourinho and played 45 minutes against Pacos de Ferreira this season. But he has failed to win a third appearance for the London club.

Although regularly spotted in senior training, he has been so far overlooked by Antonio Conte. That is, despite his glittering form in the reserves – scoring seven goals and creating three more in 14 Premier League 2 games.

Posting on Instagram, teenager John underlined his delight at moving away from Spurs for the first time and to 14th-placed League One side Charlton. He could make his debut on Monday, when Charlton take on Portsmouth.

Aurier, Sessegnon and other react as John leaves Tottenham for Charlton

Still only 18, John is well ahead of the curve. Shining in PL2 aged just 18, the attacking midfielder has a real chance of breaking into Tottenham’s senior side soon. Moving to a big club like Charlton in League One is ideal for him.

Whether he can show Tottenham he has what it takes to earn a chance next term, is unlikely. But shine on loan at Charlton and he could get himself a loan in the Championship – and a good season there would tempt Spurs.

Responding to his Instagram and to the move, both Aurier and Sessegnon wished him luck – as did Dane Scarlett, Harvey White and Dilan Markanday.
