Serge Aurier admits wanting to leave Spurs, claims ‘no competition’ at right back

Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier has commented on his situation at the club.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier has told Bal des Productions that he wanted to leave the club this summer – and feels there is no competition for him at right back.

Spurs swooped to sign Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2017, landing the Ivorian as a replacement for Kyle Walker following his move to Manchester City.

Aurier was seen as a great signing to replace Walker, even though he had somewhat lost his way at PSG, but his move has proven to be a disappointment.

Aurier has failed to establish himself under Mauricio Pochettino, and hasn’t played for Spurs since the 5^th of March, with many expecting him to go over the summer.

Spurs did sell Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid too, and whilst they didn’t bring in a right back this summer, it was still anticipated that Aurier would follow him out of the club.

Aurier ended up staying though as Spurs didn’t find a buyer, and whilst he was on the bench against Arsenal, his future with the club looks a little bleak.

Aurier has now suggested, as quoted by Football.London, that he isn’t worried about competition for places at right back because there ‘isn’t any’ competition, seemingly something of a dig about Kyle Walker-Peters, who is the sole natural right back at the club.

The 26-year-old – who still has three years left on his £70,000-a-week deal (Spotrac) – added that he decided he wanted to leave over the summer, but now feels the club trust him having kept him, but he will see how the next few months go.

“What competition? There isn’t any,” said Aurier. “I’d simply decided to leave [this summer], which was normal for me. Many things were taken into consideration. In the end, I wasn’t able to leave. It proves the club trust me on a lot of points, and we’ll see. We’ll see how the season pans out, but for now, I’m here, the transfer window is shut and we need to concentrate on the campaign ahead.”
