Luke Donald might be the best Ryder Cup captain in Europe’s storied history.
He has led the European team to two unlikely wins against the Americans. The first came after stepping in on short notice to take back the trophy in Rome, and the second came in New York as Donald become the first captain to win away in over a decade.
Very few captains lead their teams in back-to-back Ryder Cups, let alone three in a row. And that’s the decision that Donald is currently weighing ahead of 2027. He had kept his cards close to his chest so far, but he needs to make a decision soon as Europe prepares for Adare Manor.
Donald’s dilemma was put to one of his team members from the last two Ryder Cups, Sepp Straka, who revealed what he has heard about his future as captain.

Sepp Straka says if he thinks Luke Donald should remain Europe’s Ryder Cup captain
After the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Donald refused to entertain any questions about his future captaincy. And since then, he’s kept his cards close to his chest.
No news is coming out of Team Europe’s camp, and Straka said that he hasn’t heard anything either when he was asked on the Wagyu Filet Show.
The Austrian said, “I have no idea if he will. I’m not sure. He’s playing it very close to the vest here. He’s not giving us a whole lot of info on that. But I think he should if he wants to.
“I think it’s a big undertaking. I’ve seen what he’s gone through the last four years. It’s a massive job. I mean, he is meticulous in his preparation, leaves no stone unturned, and really treats it like a job.
“So it would be up to whatever he wants to do, with his family in mind, and if he wants to spend another two years doing that. It’s incredibly rewarding, I think, when you do it, but it is hard work. I would love nothing more than for him to be the captain. That would be incredible.”
Donald is known for his relentless preparation, which has unlocked his full potential of the European side over the last two events.
He’s earned the right to take his time and make whatever decision he wants to by winning two Ryder Cups, and it seems we’ll have to wait a while longer to hear his plans.
How Luke Donald can make history in 2027
No one has captained in three straight Ryder Cups since the turn of the millennium, and if Donald decides to become the first, he can do something for the first time in the event’s history.
Dating back to the first Ryder Cup in 1927, no one has ever captained a team to three straight victories. Not even when Team USA dominated the event for decades.
Speaking ahead of the Dubai Desert Classic, Donald revealed that this has been on his mind as he weighed his decision.

The 48-year-old said, “Nobody’s done it three times and won three times in a row, so there’s some bigger legacy points on up for grabs too. I think those things always motivate.”
Who knows who will be the next captain to have this opportunity? Winning an away Ryder Cup is one of the biggest challenges in any sport. With that in mind, this job will be a difficult one to walk away from for the Englishman.
