Some Arsenal fans have been hailing Martin Odegaard on social media following an ‘insane’ performance from the midfielder during Saturday’s London derby win at home to Brentford.

Mikel Arteta’s side hosted the Bees at the Emirates Stadium seeking revenge for the shock defeat on the opening day. Thomas Frank stunned the Gunners back in August by opening the campaign with a deserved 2-0 win in what was their first top-flight fixture in 74-years.

Brentford had the intent to impose themselves on a mediocre Arsenal during their summer clash. But it was the Gunners in the ascendancy from the off on Saturday, pinning the away side in their half. Yet a spirited defensive performance kept the score level until the break.

Emile Smith Rowe found the breakthrough three-minutes into the second-half, though. The Hale End product curled a delightful strike into the corner with what was Arsenal’s 17th hit.

Bukayo Saka would later double Arsenal’s lead in the 79th-minute as the game begun to become stretched. The England winger left Raya with no chance to save his strike after Alexandre Lacazette freed the forward to run through one-on-one with the Bees’ stopper.

Odegaard pulls the strings as Arsenal host Brentford

Odegaard had pulled the strings for Arsenal throughout their London derby with Brentford on Saturday, despite not influencing the scoreline. The Norway star Arteta signed for £34m from Real Madrid last summer continually imposed himself whenever he found the ball.

The 23-year-old’s efforts thrilled some Gunners fans reacting on social media. A few also noted how Odegaard is captain’s material, after The Athletic cited him as a potential long-term option to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as their skipper back in December.

Others also noted how Arsenal must sign a striker to finish the sort of chances Odegaard created against Brentford. After Aubameyang’s exit, Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are the north Londoners’ only senior centre-forwards and both will be free agents this summer.

So, here are some of the messages Arsenal fans shared on Odegaard against Brentford…
