Liverpool legend Danny Murphy has paid tribute to the ‘sensational’ Sofyan Amrabat amid claims that Morocco’s World Cup enforcer could follow in his footsteps at the Premier League giants, speaking to talkSPORT (1 December, 12pm).

On a day in which a haphazard Germany side and Belgium’s ‘Olden Generation’ bowed out at the group-stage, Morocco stormed into the last-16 for the first time since the sepia-tinged days when Diego Maradona was giving Terry Butcher nightmares.

And, after setting the tempo during that 2-0 win over Kevin de Bruyne and co, the irrepressible, indefatigable Sofyan Amrabat was at centre stage for Walid Regregui’s side once again during decisive victory over a plucky Canada outfit.

There were three tackles, three interceptions and a further three clearances. The Fiorentina battleaxe also completed 91 per cent of his passes (WhoScored). Talk about a complete midfield performance.

“He’s been sensational. He has got a bit of everything,” says Murphy, hailing a player linked with two of his former employers; Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur (Corriere dello Sport).

“Up against a talented Belgium midfield, he was the main man. He can play. He can mix it up. He’s a real talent. And I think Morocco, as a team, could surprise a few. I thought the way they played against Belgium was absolutely terrific.

“There are links with Liverpool. Even before the World Cup, there’s been a few rumours (about a potential move to the Premier League).”

Amrabat came within touching distance of a £12 million move to Tottenham during the summer of 2021, only for the deal to collapse at the eleventh hour after the former Feyenoord youngster opted to stay in Serie A.

Regragui, however, believes it is only a matter of time before Amrabat is finally on the move.

“Trust me, Amrabat is a world-class player,” the Morocco coach said of one of the World Cup’s genuine breakthrough stars.

“He is a key’ player in my plans. I expect him to move to one of the major European clubs after the World Cup.”
