After beating Birmingham City to the signing of John Terry, Aston Villa could be about to send an under-performing defender to St Andrew’s in his place.

Aston Villa fans celebrated the arrival of former England captain John Terry earlier this summer – not least because he was a reported target of rivals Birmingham City.

Blues manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed to the Mirror that he was interested in the signing of Terry, but the ex-Chelsea favourite instead opted to join Villa.

And if that was not good enough for Villa supporters, they could be about to shift a misfit defender off their books by sending him to St Andrew’s.

According to the Daily Mail, Redknapp and Birmingham are interested in bringing Tommy Elphick to the club after missing out on Terry.

The report on Monday suggested a deal could be completed in the near future and, while Elphick started his Villa Park career as captain last summer, that will be music to the ears of Villa fans.

After an underwhelming start to life in the second city, with Villa struggling in the Championship, Elphick lost the captain’s armband and his place in the team.

He started just nine of their final 25 Championship games – from December 13 onwards – and now looks destined to leave the club in this window.

Few Villa supporters will complain about his impending exit and, should his performances again falter next term, while Terry excels, they would surely be only too happy to see Elphick lining up in blue.

Birmingham supporters will be hoping they see the return of the man who skippered Bournemouth to promotion in 2015.
