In quite a surprising turn of events, Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares is finding himself linked with a transfer to – wait for it – Manchester City.
Indeed, ESPN reported on Friday morning that Manchester City had been keeping an eye on the new Arsenal left-back.
And when we say ‘new’, Tavares genuinely is new.
The Gunners signed him from Benfica as recently as July, with the 21-year-old jet-heeled livewire managing only 612 minutes of Premier League football since then.
Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola is reportedly an admirer of the attack-minded defender.
And here is how some Arsenal supporters reacted to the surprising speculation on Twitter:
Return of the Scotland international
Mikel Arteta’s outfit are home to Southampton in the Premier League this afternoon and Tavares will do well to start yet another game in defence.
There is simply no denying that the Portuguese gem has excited a substantial amount of Arsenal supporters recently but, honestly, Arteta is likely to revert to continue using former Celtic player Kieran Tierney on the left side of defence again.
Exciting as Tavares has been, the youngster has also made a number of mistakes in recent weeks and the truth is, the Scotland international is a far more polished performer.
Tierney started the defeat away at Everton on Monday evening and although Tavares replaced the Scottish player with 25 minutes to go, the Spanish trainer is more than likely going to keep faith.
Besides, with Manchester City watching, the Arsenal manager may do well to remember that and keep his secret weapon a little more secretive from here on in.
