Former Everton midfielder Segundo Castillo has told the club’s official website of his pride at Enner Valencia turning out for the Blues.

Valencia made the move to Goodison Park on deadline day of the summer transfer window in a loan move from West Ham United.

He is the second Ecuadorian to feature for the Blues in their history, with Castillo holding the honour of being the first when he spent a season on loan during the 2008-09 campaign.

And the midfielder says he is proud to see his compatriot following in his footsteps.

“I became very happy knowing that for the second time in their history, a club like Everton was going to have a player from Ecuador,” he told the club’s official website.

“I wish every success to Enner Valencia at the football club. Enner is a good person. I know him and I know he will adjust to his teammates and the club. He is a humble man and that will help him get adjusted quickly.”

The former Blues midfielder has also advised Ronald Koeman that he should play Valencia as a second forward rather than up front on his own.

The Hammers forward has largely been brought in to provide back-up to first-choice striker Romelu Lukaku.

His arrival does, however, give the Everton boss the option of playing two strikers up front, should the situation require it.

And Castillo believes that utilising his compatriot behind the Belgian would be the best way to get the most out of him.

“For me, his best position is as a ‘second’ forward,” he added.

“He has so much mobility to play and that way he doesn’t feel trapped by the defensive players who are fixed in that area.”
