Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min was fortunate to win FIFA’s Puskas Goal Of The Year award, Arsenal legend Martin Keown has told talkSPORT (18 December, 12pm).
Well, at least someone at Spurs has an award to put on their mantelpiece.
Son’s slaloming, 70-yard solo effort against Burnley is officially the best goal scored by any footballer during the past 12 months – well, according to a public vote anyway.
Tottenham’s number seven fought off competition from Andre-Pierre Gignac, Luis Suarez and Dundalk’s Jordan Flores last night with Son among the big winners at FIFA’s annual The Best awards alongside Jurgen Klopp and Robert Lewandowski.
But, faced with such remarkable competition, Keown feels Son may have been a tad fortunate.
“I’ve seen better,” said a man who, if he was part of Sean Dyche’s defence would surely have smashed Son before he had a chance to get his shot away.
“I’m surprised it has won an award of that esteem. It was a good goal but I wouldn’t say it was the best goal of the year scored anywhere.
“He ran in almost a straight line. I don’t remember him weaving in and out of any players. I didn’t see him weave in between anyone. Did he deviate?
“It’s nothing to do with my Arsenal hat. I just think there have been better goals scored than that this year. It’s just my opinion!”
In our humble opinion, Flores’ gravity-defying volley or Suarez’s ingenius chipped back-heel was perhaps a more fitting winner.
Then again, with Son in the form of his life right now, don’t bet against the South Korean securing a place among the nominees again in 2021.
