Speaking on the Sky Sports Pitch to Post podcast, Jamie Redknapp has said that Trent Alexander-Arnold hasn’t been the same player for Liverpool this year.

The right-back was one of the best players in the Premier League last term, clocking up assist after assist from full-back, but this term those performances have largely deserted him.

Redknapp believes that levels have dropped throughout the Liverpool squad, singling out Alexander-Arnold as one player who isn’t performing up to standard.

“You can’t deny that the levels have dropped, certain players, individual players if you were to go throughout the team,” Redknapp said.

“The keeper’s not been as good, the right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold if you look last year and they year before his levels were so high, best right-back in the world we were talking about, but he’s not been the same player this year.

“That can be for a number of reasons, is he thinking ‘I’ve cracked it now, this is it all I’ve got to do is turn up and play’ and not doing the basics of what made him one of the best right-backs, which is great defending, great going forward, working hard to stop the opposition first and foremost. I’ve seen a drop off, and if he’s being honest with himself, he’ll look in the mirror and say ‘I’ve not been as good this year’.”

As much as we hate to say it, Redknapp is right.

Alexander-Arnold was arguably the best right-back on the planet last term, but this year he’s just not been at the races.

Assists are what defines Trent’s game, breaking the record for asissts from a defender last year, but this term he’s only managed to set up three goals, a huge drop off from the 13 goals he laid on last season.

We can only hope that the youngster manages to rediscover his form sooner rather than later.
