Eurosport reported this week that Arsenal are interested in signing Raheem Sterling.
Despite shining for England in recent weeks at Euro 2020, his club prospects haven’t been all that great and Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola used him sparingly toward the end of last season.
And according to Eurosport, Arsenal have enquired about signing the 26-year-old winger this summer.
With Mikel Arteta having worked as Guardiola’s assistant at Eastlands for a number of years, this one has legs – and definitely much more so if you believe transfer gossip coming out today.
According to The Sun, City are set to bid £100 million to sign Aston Villa attacker Jack Grealish.
And Crystal Palace winger Andros Townsend believes that Grealish’s potential move to the Etihad Stadium may spell the end of Sterling’s time up there.
Asked whether Sterling will leave if Grealish arrives, Townsend said to talkSPORT: “It seems that way. He fell out of favour toward the end of last season, wasn’t getting in the team. So it does seem that way [Sterling]. You would start to worry for the likes of Sterling if Grealish does come in.”
Is Raheem Sterling joining Arsenal?
There’s always a lot of you-know-what swirling around at this time of the year, in respect to transfers.
But it’s definitely plausible that Grealish’s would-be move to City offsets a departure for Sterling – and given the former Liverpool star’s history with the Arsenal boss, it genuinely could happen.
He cost the Sky Blues £49 million in 2015 and still has two years left on his contract, so the Gunners, who are set to spend £50 million on Ben White, can expect to pay a decent amount.
That being said, he’s still only 26 and Arsenal would be effectively getting the prime of his career and given how lethal Sterling can be, it could be a fine signing for the North Londoners.
