On the face of it, Everton’s decision to loan Moise Kean to Paris Saint-Germain looks a good one.
After all, this is a man who seemingly tallied more fines than goals during his ill-fated debut season in the Premier League.
And when PSG came calling on the final day of the European transfer window, few at Goodison Park were mourning the departure of a £27 million striker whose six starts and two goals made a mockery of that eye-watering price tag.
But, on closer inspection, letting Kean go without bringing in a replacement might not have been the best idea – especially if you’re looking to challenge for a Europa League berth… or better.

Yes, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has given Robert Lewandowski a run for his money during an exceptional start to the 2020/21 campaign.
But with Everton’s number nine marked out of the game in Sunday’s bubble-bursting 2-0 defeat at Southampton, the lack of attacking depth at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal suddenly looks a tad worrisome.
Ancelotti clearly sees Richarlison more as a winger than a centre-forward and that means the only other senior striker on Everton’s books is Cenk Tosun.
The seldom-seen Turk hasn’t made a Premier League appearance for the Toffees since December 2019 and, to make matters worse, is still recuperating from the cruciate ligament injury he suffered on loan at Crystal Palace.
Kean hardly convinced in Everton colours. But something is better than nothing, no?
And while Everton were drawing a blank on the South Coast, Kean’s two goals inspired PSG to a 4-0 thrashing of Dijon.
Talk about rubbing salt into the wounds.
Here’s what some Everton fans had to say on Twitter after the Southampton result.
