Stephen Warnock expressed his shock at how quick Tottenham Hotspur’s new boy, Micky van de Ven is after watching him live.
The 22-year-old has only been at Tottenham for a matter of months, yet he is already a favourite of his new supporters.
A lot of talk is about the attack-minded players at Spurs and this new-look style which Ange Postecoglou has brought to the table.
But former Aston Villa and Liverpool defender Warnock was sure to point out how ‘brilliant’ Micky van de Ven has been, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports (02/10/23 at 10:40 am).
Alongside Cristian Romero, the duo are starting to build a very strong partnership for a Spurs defence that has had its issues over the years.
It needs to be remembered that Spurs are now pushing higher up the pitch and the backline doesn’t have the protection it once did, which makes the job of the central defensive duo much tougher.

Micky van de Ven’s pace
“He’s brilliant,” said Warnock. “I couldn’t believe how quick he was. Seeing him live. You go ‘Wow, they have a player on their hands’.”

Tottenham’s defensive depth
The issue isn’t the players starting. From Pedro Porro to Destiny Udogie. Many Spurs fans are very pleased by what they are bringing to the table and excited by what else can come.
But the depth to the backline is pretty weak, with the likes of Eric Dier, Fraser Forster and Ben Davies, the players to come in if there are injuries.
That’s a huge concern because it should have been dealt with in the summer, so from now until January, Spurs fans will be praying that their starting players can remain injury-free.
