Jamie Carragher says that he could see just how angry Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was at full-time, even if his comments suggested differently.

Speaking during Sky Sports’s live coverage, Arteta defended his Arsenal players after their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City.

The Spanish boss was keen not to publicly criticise David Luiz despite his nightmare display.

But Carragher senses that Arteta words in private may have been very different.

“He didn’t come out and lambast David Luiz. He then spoke about the spirit of the team,” Carragher said, about Arteta’s post match comments.

“Do I believe everything he said? No. I’m not sure he is happy. You could see in his eyes how disappointed and angry he was with certain things he’d seen tonight. But he’s stuck by his players.”

Arteta’s anger at his Arsenal players is understandable, as they badly struggled last night.

The Gunners managed just three shots at the Etihad Stadium, as they made an uninspiring return to action.

Raheem Sterling scored City’s opener after a Luiz error, before a Kevin de Bruyne penalty and a close-range effort from Phil Foden sealed Pep Guardiola’s side’s triumph.

The defeat has left Arsenal still sitting in ninth place in the Premier League table, after they failed to take their opportunity to make up ground on the rest of the top four chasers.
