West Ham United travel to Liverpool in their second midweek game of the Premier League season. So, what are the Hammers’ biggest top-flight wins on a Wednesday night to date?

The Irons have previously played 100 times on a Wednesday since the Premier League was founded in 1992. They have also won on 32 occasions, with Paolo Di Canio, Jermain Defoe, Mark Noble and Sebastien Haller all contributing to the club’s best results in those fixtures.

Liverpool also feature among West Ham’s biggest Premier League wins on a Wednesday as the Irons took a 3-0 result in 1995. The Hammers have only bettered that scoreline on two occasions since. While their last four wins on a Wednesday have been by one or two goals.

West Ham have won 32 Premier League games on a Wednesday so far

West Ham drew their last Premier League match on a Wednesday after holding Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw in August. Thilo Kehrer gifted Spurs the lead in the 34th minute after he turned the ball into his own net. But Michail Antonio later fed Tomas Soucek to equalise.

The Czech Republic midfielder’s first goal of the 2022/23 top-flight season resulted in West Ham’s 23rd draw on a Wednesday. Of their 100 Premier League games on the third day of the week, the Hammers have so far lost in 45 while playing 60 at home and 40 on the road.

Liverpool have played in eight of West Ham’s 100 Premier League fixtures on a Wednesday so far, as well. The Reds will play a ninth Wednesday fixture with the Irons this week when David Moyes’ men visit Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s side won the last such meeting 2-0 in 2020.

Mohamed Salah will strive to repeat his goal at the London Stadium in January 2020 in this week’s game. The Egyptian converted from the spot to break the deadlock. A penalty from Noble also helped West Ham achieve one of their biggest wins on a Wednesday to date…

West Ham beat Derby and Bournemouth 4-0 for their biggest wins on a Wednesday

West Ham have beaten Derby County and AFC Bournemouth 4-0 for their biggest Premier League wins on a Wednesday. Glenn Roeder’s Irons put four past the Rams on Boxing Day back in 2001. While Moyes’ Hammers demolished the Cherries on New Years’ Day in 2020.

Sebastien Schemmel ensured the festive celebrations continued as he broke the deadlock at the Boleyn Ground just five minutes into Derby’s trip to the capital. Roeder would have to wait until the final stages to see his side score again. But the Irons would not disappoint.

Di Canio got in on the act with the final quarter of an hour approaching to give West Ham a bit of distance to Derby. Trevor Sinclair then struck his first goal of the top-flight term with just four minutes left. Yet there was enough time for Defoe to strike his fifth of the season.

Haller helped the Hammers humble Bournemouth before his form disappeared

Bournemouth would fall victim to another festive rout in east London as West Ham saw in 2020 in style. Noble offered the first goal of the game in the 17th minute to spark a flurry of finishes. The Irons captain met Robert Snodgrass’ pass to strike his second of the term.

Ryan Fredericks then took his turn to create as the full-back found Haller for the Ivorian’s sixth of the season. Haller enjoyed a strong start at the London Stadium after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for £45m in 2019. Manuel Pellegrini’s swoop broke the Irons’ record.

Noble would cap off a lively 18 minutes for West Ham against Bournemouth as he fired in a penalty 10 minutes before the break. Felipe Anderson later offered his first goal for the term from Declan Rice’s first assist to put West Ham 4-0 ahead with 25 minutes remaining.

Yet Haller would only score once more in the 2019/20 Premier League term. The 28-year-old failing to rediscover his form would eventually see Moyes sell him to Ajax in January 2021 for £20m. But after 47 goals in 66 matches, he joined Borussia Dortmund for £29m in July.

His form with the Eredivisie giants also helped Haller rank 13th for the 2022 Ballon d’Or as Karim Benzema took the gong. Haller is yet to make a competitive appearance for Borussia Dortmund while undergoing treatment for testicular cancer, which was diagnosed in July.

Liverpool fell victim to one of West Ham’s biggest wins on a Wednesday

Liverpool will hope to avoid a repeat of May 1995 when West Ham travel to Anfield having fallen victim to one of the Irons’ biggest Premier League wins on a Wednesday so far. The Hammers beat the Reds 3-0 at the Boleyn Ground in the penultimate match of the season.

John Moncur found Matty Holmes to break the deadlock for Harry Redknapp’s Hammers in the 29th minute. Three different players would register assists that day with Trevor Morley and Tim Breacker later feeding Don Hutchison to strike the back of David James’ net twice.

West Ham have also taken a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace for another Premier League win on a Wednesday by three goals. The Irons beat their London rivals at home in December 1997 with John Hartson, Eyal Berkovic, David Unsworth and Steve Lomas all beating Kevin Miller.

The Hammers have claimed 10 wins in the Premier League on a Wednesday by two goals to date. They have also edged 18 by single-goal margins – including against Liverpool in 2008.
