Seattle and Las Vegas are widely viewed as the front-runners to secure NBA expansion franchises if the league moves forward with a vote this summer.

ESPN insider Shams Charania has reported that the NBA Board of Governors is expected to formally examine expansion plans at upcoming meetings, with momentum building toward a potential decision.

If approved, the NBA would grow from 30 to 32 teams, with both cities positioned as the leading candidates.

Seattle and Las Vegas positioned at the front

Shams Charania indicated that Seattle and Las Vegas are considered the most viable markets should the league approve expansion.

A Board of Governors discussion is anticipated in the coming months, and a summer vote has been described as a realistic possibility.

Seattle has remained a consistent expansion target since the SuperSonics relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008, while Las Vegas has established itself as a major professional sports destination in recent years.

Each city offers modern arena facilities and proven market strength, key factors in the league’s evaluation process.

Expansion decision could come this summer

The NBA has not added a franchise since 2004, but rising team valuations and the league’s evolving financial framework have intensified expansion discussions.

Commissioner Adam Silver has previously stated that expansion talks would gain clarity after media rights negotiations and collective bargaining matters were settled.

With those foundational issues addressed, focus has shifted to timing and market selection.

While no official announcement has been made, current reporting places Seattle and Las Vegas firmly at the forefront if expansion is approved this summer.
