Sean Longstaff is ‘really excited’ to have Anthony Gordon at Newcastle United. The winger sealed a January transfer from Everton to St James’ Park after a decade at Goodison Park.
Newcastle agreed to pay Everton an upfront £40m to sign Gordon amid rival interest from Chelsea. The 21-year-old, who can end up costing the Magpies £45m after add-ons, forced through the move. The Toffees only agreed to sell after he made a formal transfer request.
Gordon is a product of the Merseyside natives’ academy and joined the Blues at the age of just 11. He also broke through for his senior debut under Sam Allardyce at just 16 years old in 2017. But it was not until 2020 when Carlo Ancelotti took over that he became a regular.
The England U21 forward would go on to offer seven goals and eight assists through his 78 senior appearances for the Toffees. Gordon registered three of his goals during 16 Premier League games this season. He is Everton’s joint-top scorer in the top-flight so far this term.
His other four first-team goals each came during the 2021/22 Premier League season over 35 appearances. But after a promising start with two goals in his first five games this term, the winger struggled for form and fell out of favour before Everton sacked Frank Lampard.

Gordon only started in one of his final four Premier League appearances for Everton since October. Lampard also left the forward as an unused substitute in what would prove to be their final match for the Toffees. Everton lost 2-0 away at West Ham United on January 21.
To now see Newcastle sign Gordon with a January transfer from Everton thrilled Longstaff. The Toon product believes Eddie Howe will help get the forward back to his best, and even higher, levels. He has also now revealed why the Magpies’ move has pleased him so much.
“Really excited,” Longstaff has told talkSPORT. “I was over the moon when we signed him. When you watch him, he’s got such great energy, can go both ways, left and right feet.
“We didn’t really train yesterday but he was out on the grass by himself and he had, probably, 10 coaches and the whole squad watching him. Nothing like a bit of pressure on your first day.
“Delighted to have him, seems like a really nice lad. Working with the manager, he’s probably going to get the best out of him.”
