Tim Sherwood is backing Sean Dyche for the Aston Villa job if they decide they want to focus on survival in the Premier League this season.

Villa were beaten 3-0 by Fulham on Thursday night and wasted no time in sacking Steven Gerrard.

The Liverpool legend barely had time to process the defeat before being given his marching orders.

Caretaker boss Aaron Danks had a great start this afternoon, hammering Brentford 4-0 after three goals in the first 15 minutes.

Danks is unlikely to land the job permanently and Villa are understood to be considering a number of candidates.

Villa ultimately need to figure out what they’re aiming for on the pitch.

This feels a little similar to Everton now, where ambitious signings and hires were made but without actually moving forward.

Villa are at the same crossroads; do they try and go big in the belief that they can crack the top eight, or consolidate in the Premier League?

If they decide to focus on survival and guaranteeing their Premier League future, Sean Dyche could be the man.

Dyche did a frankly ridiculous job at Burnley, taking them into Europe whilst facing budget restrictions that few Premier League managers have encountered.

Dyche left Burnley towards the end of last season and is still available now.

Former Villa boss Tim Sherwood has now told Sky Sports that he thinks Dyche could be ideal if Villa are focusing on staying up.

Sherwood believes that Dyche would be able to adapt his fairly direct style to suit the Villa squad better and ultimately provide goals.

Sherwood thinks the Villa fans want somebody passionate like Dyche and believes he will get some ‘honest’ performances out of the Villa squad.

“If they’re worried about staying in the division then I think it’s a Sean Dyche job,” said Sherwood. “I think with better personnel, Sean cuts his cloth accordingly, whatever he’s got as his personnel in the dressing room, he will play to that style.”

“We know he likes to play direct but he can score goals, he fills up the box, they want to see goalmouth action there, that’s what the fans want. They want to see honest performances and they want to see their manager with his heart on his sleeve,” he added.

This isn’t the sexy pick for Villa, especially when Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel have been mentioned.

Dyche likely wouldn’t be Villa’s top pick for the job either but his work at Burnley should put him in the mix for Premier League jobs.
