Aston Villa boss Dean Smith claimed that Burnley wasted a lot of time during goal kicks but Sean Dyche was having none of that.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche spoke to the Lancashire Telegraph as he rubbished Dean Smith’s claims of time-wasting by the Clarets.

Aston Villa took a 2-1 lead in the 79th minute thanks to a goal from John McGinn but that barely lasted two minutes as Chris Wood levelled the game to share the spoils between the two clubs. A frustrated Dean Smith, who was so close to his second win of the campaign, had some words for his opposition.

He said: “Burnley will go home with what they came for, you seen that with how long they were taking with goal kicks. The game was going to be a stop-start with their rhythm.”

Dyche was asked about his thoughts to his counterpart’s comments and the Burnley boss rubbished Smith’s time-wasting accusations.

“It was a funny kind of game. A lot of odd decisions, I don’t think they made a big difference, but the injury time amuses me, apparently we were wasting time, then they score and funnily it slowed down their way, a marvel of the modern game,” Dyche said.

“We’re not trying to waste time, neither is anyone, I put the clock on it, how long it takes for us and the opposition to play out from the back, but it’s another little joyous moment for the fans, which makes me laugh.”

With two wins and three draws in seven games, Burnley are comfortable in 10th place and their performances have been a lot better than how it was at this time last year. Sean Dyche’s side have a tough next few games in the league as they take on Everton, Leicester City and Chelsea followed by a difficult away trip to Sheffield United who have troubled teams at Bramall Lane so far this season.

Villa, on the other hand, are struggling for points having won just one game so far this season. The Premier League is as competitive as ever this season and if Smith fails to get his side firing, he might find himself chasing the other sides who are in the same boat as Villa.
