The Sheffield Wednesday midfielder is said to be wanted by Premier League clubs.
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sean Clare continues to be linked with a move away from Hillsborough, with the Sunday Mirror [page 63] the latest publication to cast doubt on his future. A number of Premier League clubs – notably Everton and Tottenham Hotspur – have been credited with interest in Clare, who has impressed in his four Owls appearances to date.
However, while the 21-year-old is out of contract at the end of this season – leaving Wednesday powerless to keep him at the club against his will – the Owls are unlikely to go empty handed should Clare depart. HITC Sport can explain…
Clare – like Hillsborough teammate George Hirst – is under 24, meaning that Wednesday are entitled to some training compensation if he does decide to leave – providing they have at least offered him a deal on equal or greater terms to the one he is on currently. According to both the player and club discussions have taken place, and it is reasonable to assume that a pay-rise would be on the cards, given Clare’s recent breakthrough at first team level.
So what then? Well, Clare would be free to talk to anyone who wishes that wishes to sign him. However, unlike with a regular Bosman transfer, the acquiring club must also agree a price with Sheffield Wednesday. And if a positive conclusion cannot be reached, the fee will be determined at a tribunal hearing, with neither team getting a say.
The rules are slightly different, however, should Clare move to a club outside of England, in which case Wednesday stand to receive far less than they would have done otherwise. Celtic are only thought to have paid around £500,000 for Moussa Dembele two years ago, whereas a domestic move would have landed Fulham an extra £4 million, according to Get West London.
Therefore, if Clare does not re-sign for the Owls, then losing him to another English club – preferably one in the Premier League – is in their best interests, although tying the former Nike Academy player to a long-term contract would be the best way to maximise future earnings.
