Everton have the second best defensive record in the Premier League this season.
Everton defender Seamus Coleman has told the Liverpool Echo what manager Ronald Koeman demands of them from a defensive standpoint.
The Blues were one of the worst defensive sides in the division last year, conceding 55 goals in the Premier League.
They were heavily criticised as a result, with many blaming the Spaniard’s open style for their defensive frailties.
It ultimately lost him his job, with Ronald Koeman coming in from Southampton to replace him this summer.
The Dutchman has quickly set about improving the defence, with his side currently boasting the second best record in the division in that department.
It has been a drastic turnaround and Coleman has shared the main message that their new manager gives them.
“Koeman demands that we all defend, from front to back,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“Last season it was a case of people saying, ‘Oh, look at Everton’s terrible defence’. But now I think people are realising it’s not just four defenders and a goalkeeper. There is more to it.”
The Republic of Ireland international has however admitted that his own form was not up to standard last season.
The full-back has been a star man for the Blues for a number of years but both injuries and his team’s struggles saw him fail to reach the high standards he has set.
This season has seen him playing closer to what the Toffees faithful have become accustomed to and he admits he will take the criticism of last year on the chin.
“Last season I didn’t hit my standards and that has stuck with me even if it’s very difficult to stand out in a team who are conceding goals,” he added.
“Footballers don’t like to be criticised but I have no problem taking it when you haven’t played well. I will listen and take it on the chin and try and bounce back.”
