The Republic of Ireland were knocked out of Euro 2016 on Sunday.
Quoted by the Daily Mail, Seamus Coleman has admitted that the Republic of Ireland are disappointed by their exit from Euro 2016.
The Irish were knocked out at the last 16 stage on Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 by France in an entertaining clash between the two sides.
The game had started well for them as Shane Long won an early penalty that was well converted by winger Robbie Brady. They held out until half time with an impressive first half showing against a lacklustre French side.
The hosts rallied in the second half though, as two goals from Antoine Griezmann saw them progress to the quarter-finals of the competition at the expense of Martin O’Neill’s team.
It was a disappointing end for the Irish after their win over Italy, and Coleman admitted after the game that they are disappointed by the result.
“We are disappointed,” the Daily Mail quotes him as saying. “We felt it was there for us and we gave our all. It shows how well we have done that we are disappointed getting beat.”
It now remains to be seen whether Ireland can use their performances this summer as a platform for further success in future.
They have been handed a tough qualification group for the World Cup alongside Wales, Austria and Serbia among others.
Their displays in France have shown they can compete with the best though and they will be keen to taste more competition football despite the disappointment this summer.
