Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down as Manchester United manager in 2013, having just secured his 13th Premier League title. The club haven’t managed to win another league crown since his departure.

Following their loss of the 2011/12 Premier League title on goal difference, a plan was set in motion at Manchester United. This plan included signing Robin van Persie along with several promising young talents.

The Red Devils would go on to clinch a historic 20th league title with a squad that combined big-name players and experienced veterans.

Despite clinching the league title in his final season, Ferguson’s squad was clearly ageing. Key figures like Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, and Patrice Evra were nearing the end of their playing days.

Even though some of them moved on to other clubs after leaving United, their best years were behind them. This was something Ferguson was aware of, according to former Premier League talent scout Paul Montgomery.

“Sir Alex, he had Vidic and Ferdinand, and I think that helped him retire,” said Montgomery when speaking to Beyond The Back Four.

“He thought: ‘ohh hang on, when I’ve lost them who have I got to win because I’m expected to win a Champions League etc’.”

“And I think that kind of helped him retire at the time he did when he lost those players.

“Because you’ve got to have that spine 100 per cent if you’re going to be a top-top side. No ifs, buts or maybes – that is the main ingredient.”

The partnership between Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic was widely regarded as one of the best in Europe during its prime years. Their defensive solidity played a crucial role in Manchester United’s Champions League triumph back in 2008.
