Rangers winger Barrie McKay is reportedly wanted by RB Leipzig.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has told the Daily Mail that he thinks Rangers ace Barrie McKay should make a move to RB Leipzig if the opportunity arises.

McKay, 22, joined Rangers from Kilmarnock back in 2011, but played just once in his first season with the club, before hitting four goals in 41 games during the 2012-13 campaign following Rangers’ demotion to the fourth tier.

After loan spells with Greenock Morton and Raith Rovers, many believed that McKay would struggle to live up to his potential at Ibrox – but he’s now one of the most important players in the Rangers squad.

The winger – who already has a Scotland cap to his name – was vital last season as he scored nine times in 48 games for Rangers whilst helping the club win promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

McKay has endured his ups and downs so far this season, but his most recent performance – in the 2-1 defeat to Celtic – showed just what the winger can do, as he looked back to his best in a superb display.

Now, the Daily Record report that German side RB Leipzig, who beat Rangers 4-0 in a friendly on Sunday, have opened talks about a £6million deal for McKay, as they look to bring in another Scottish winger having signed Oliver Burke in August.

Today, McKay should line up for Rangers against Motherwell, and Well boss Mark McGhee has told the Daily Mail that the winger should join a ‘really exciting model’ at RB Leipzig if the opportunity arises, even joking that he’d like him to leave before today’s game.

McGhee knows his fair share about moving from Scotland to Germany having joined Hamburg from Aberdeen back in 1984, and suggested that he isn’t surprised by the interest in McKay, recommending a move to Germany for the Rangers ace.

“Would I encourage that? Yes – I think he should go this afternoon,” joked McGhee. “Maybe Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace could go as well. When you look at Oliver Burke and the young players they are bringing in, Leipzig seem to have a really exciting model.”

“For any young player going to place like that, especially in a league like the Bundesliga, I’d tell them it’s a fantastic place to play and a fantastic country to live in. They are fantastic people, too, so I’d always recommend that players take that opportunity if they get it. I hadn’t heard that story but it doesn’t surprise me,” he added.
