Scottish FA bosses are ‘urgently seeking answers’ from the Scottish Government after National Clinical Director Jason Leitch announced stadiums can return to full capacity from August 9 – leaving Rangers fans hopeful they’ll finally get to see Steven Gerrard’s Scottish champions in action.
Leitch confirmed that from August 9 arenas and stadiums can get back to 100%, almost 18 months after fans were locked out following Rangers’ Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen.
According to the Daily Record, that has taken the Scottish FA by surprise with chief executive Ian Maxwell last week saying that he didn’t expect full capacities for quite a while yet.
The planned change would see clubs return to normal with the Premier Sports Cup second round being the first set of fixtures where grounds could be full.
It would also mean the season’s first Old Firm could take place in front of over 50,000 fans at Ibrox when Rangers and Celtic clash on August 29.
Fans have already started slowly returning to games
Hampden has already hosted three games at Euro 2020 with around 25% capacity with one more to take place later on today.
The return to full capacity couldn’t have come at a better time for clubs as they prepare for the new season getting underway next month.
While capacities will be limited to 2000 for the opening few weeks of the season, the fact there’s finally looking like being an end to restrictions will be a huge boost for clubs and fans alike.
