Scottie Scheffler fired himself back into contention at the RBC Heritage on Saturday after a superb round of 64.
At the time of writing, Matt Fitzpatrick leads Scheffler by three strokes heading into the final round of the RBC Heritage.
The 29-year-old world number one was much more like his old self on Saturday at Harbour Town Links.
Scheffler made eight birdies and a bogey during his third round 64 at the RBC Heritage.
And it’s fair to say that Scheffler’s form at the RBC Heritage has been much more like what we’re used to seeing from him.
The man from Dallas, Texas, now has a strong chance of winning for the 21st time on the PGA Tour on Sunday following his fine third round on Hilton Head Island.
However, he’ll have to get past Matt Fitzpatrick first.
Scottie Scheffler speaks out about Matt Fitzpatrick at the RBC Heritage
Scheffler spoke to reporters after his third round 64 at Harbour Town Golf Links.
He responded when asked to share any observations he may have made about Fitzpatrick, after seeing him close up this week on Hilton Head Island.
“Yeah, Fitzy is a guy that — I admire him because he works really hard,“ Scheffler said.
“He’s a guy that I see always doing stuff in order to play well. He’s a guy that he gets really into his stats. He’s a guy that’s going to check every single box that he can in order to get out here and play well.
“He’s a guy that when you look has always improved over the course of his career and made some changes in order to improve.
“You look at him when he first came out, he was a lot slower off the tee than he is now. He’s got a lot of speed.
“He doesn’t use it on every single shot, but he uses it when necessary. Not only is he a hard worker, but I think he’s a really smart player, as well.“
When Scottie Scheffler knew he was back in contention at the RBC Heritage
The world number one was asked by reporters whether he realized quickly that he was back in contention to win this week.
“Well, yeah, I knew pretty early that I was going to make up some ground,” Scheffler responded.
“Just because I think Fitzpatrick started at 14 and then Hovland was at 13, but the next guy was at 10.
“After my start, I think I was maybe 5-under through 6 before some of those guys had even got on the course, so it felt like I had already gotten myself into contention there.“
Scottie Scheffler will be targeting a round in the mid-low 60s on Sunday, as he looks to win his 21st PGA Tour title.
And as we all know, he’s more than capable of doing just that.
