How Tiger Woods struggled in Ryder Cup play is one of the more puzzling storylines in golf.

The Americans are hoping their next era under Scottie Scheffler will be a different story. The world number one has already claimed two majors this season and looks poised to take on a bigger leadership role in the team.

Scheffler has made it clear he doesn’t expect to follow the same path, telling reporters at Pinehurst ahead of the U.S. Open: “We’re not going to lose seven or eight Ryder Cups.”

Scottie Scheffler says Tiger Woods’ aura affected Ryder Cup partners

Tiger’s struggles in the Ryder Cup were most noticeable in team formats, where he posted a 9-19-1 record. But when it came to Sunday singles, he held his own, finishing with a 4-2-2 record – a sign that the individual format suited him better.

Teaming up with Woods wasn’t easy. Beyond the usual Ryder Cup nerves, playing alongside someone of his stature brought added attention and heightened expectations. While Tiger was used to carrying that kind of weight, it could be overwhelming for others.

Scheffler suggested that the sheer presence of Woods during his peak years may have been more challenging than people realised for those paired with him.

He told reporters: “I think some of the difficulty you had with playing with Tiger – I mean, I don’t even know what it could be.

“It could just be the aura that was Tiger Woods. There were some times there when he was doing nothing but winning golf tournaments and just beating the absolute c–p out of people time and time again.”

Scheffler’s rise has drawn comparisons to Tiger’s dominance, especially after his run this season. But despite concerns about whether he might face similar challenges in team events, Scheffler believes both he and this American side are built differently from past teams.

Why Scottie Scheffler believes he’s a better Ryder Cup partner than Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods’ Ryder Cup struggles showed up most in team play. He actually had a winning record in Sunday singles, going 4-2-2, which speaks to how well he could handle pressure. But in foursomes and fourballs, he went just 9-19-1.

Playing alongside Woods wasn’t easy. It wasn’t just about the Ryder Cup pressure; there was also the added expectation that came with being paired with him. While Woods thrived under that weight, not everyone else did.

Scheffler suggested it might have been Woods’ presence that made things difficult for his partners.

“It could just be the aura that was Tiger Woods,” he said ahead of the tournament. “There was some times there when he was doing nothing but winning golf tournaments and just beating the absolute c–p out of people time and time again.”

Scheffler has drawn comparisons to Woods following his dominant run in 2025, and there are already questions about whether he might face similar challenges in team play. But Scheffler sees key differences between himself and this current American squad.

Scottie Scheffler says Tiger’s ‘aura’ weighed on teammates

Scheffler has a different presence on course compared to Woods. He stays composed and rarely shows much emotion, even during big moments at major events.

Unlike Tiger, he doesn’t bring the same kind of intimidation factor into matches — something Scheffler thinks makes him easier to pair with during team events like the Ryder Cup.
