Scottie Scheffler will be keen to bounce back this week at The Open Championship after he missed the cut last week at the Genesis Scottish Open.

Scheffler’s missed cut at the Scottish Open was the first time he has missed out on playing weekend golf since August 2022.

The world number one is obviously not used to missing cuts – last week at The Renaissance Club was only the 20th of his professional career.

However, Scottie Scheffler will surely use that as fuel for his title defence at The Open Championship this year.

Scheffler has actually been in fine spirits this week at Royal Birkdale ahead of The Open, in spite of his disappointing performance at the Scottish Open.

But what hurt the 30-year-old more? Missing the cut in Scotland or losing the playoff at the Travelers Championship three weeks ago?

The man from Dallas, Texas, addressed the media at Royal Birkdale on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the start of The Open Championship.

Scheffler responded when asked whether it felt strange missing out on playing weekend golf in Scotland.

Yeah. Yeah, I don’t really know how to elaborate on that, to be honest with you, he admitted.

It’s funny, one of my buddies who plays out here had a long text to me about what you can do when you miss a cut. He was like, hey, you can practise at the facilities.

Is Scottie Scheffler more likely to win The Open or miss the cut at Royal Birkdale?

You can still go to the gym. You can also go to the next tournament. It was basically all my options. He never sent it to me, but he told me about it. I was like, oh, you should have sent it; I was a bit lost.

I would say missing a cut is probably the hardest thing. I don’t think it hurts as much as coming close to winning and finishing second. I felt like coming in second at Travelers hurt more than missing the cut, but missing the cut is significantly more frustrating is how I would describe it.

Scottie Scheffler reveals how he made use of his time after his missed cut

Scheffler was asked by reporters whether he did anything differently considering the extra time he had following his missed cut.

Yeah, let’s see. On Saturday I went over to the gym, worked out, and we travelled down here in the afternoon and got settled into the house, he replied.

I played 18 on Sunday. Played nine holes yesterday and today, so getting used to the golf course.

Yeah, you never want to have a weekend off, but going into a tournament when you’re defending, there’s always a bit more stuff to do. So it wasn’t the worst thing in the world, albeit it was quite frustrating.

Like you said, I got down here a bit earlier, just getting used to the course and getting some extra rest in a week where there’s some more demands on your time isn’t the worst thing, even though quite frustrating.
