Scottie Scheffler shot an uncharacteristic 70 at the Procore Championship but remains under par, sharing his thoughts on the course.

The Silverado Resort is packed with star power this week, with the entire US Ryder Cup team in attendance and some big names taking part in California.

Among the stars is Scheffler, currently holding the number one spot in the world rankings. He is hoping to finish off a strong year by adding another win to his record.

But after posting a 70 in his first round, the Dallas native finds himself already seven shots behind MacKenzie Hughes.

Scheffler spoke to reporters after his round to share his thoughts on how things went at Silverado Resort.

It is natural for players to look for reasons when things are not clicking, but Scheffler was not making any excuses after his opening 70.

When asked about the conditions at Silverado Resort, he focused on the challenges without sounding overly critical.

“Well, you’ve got to get the ball in the fairway. There is a little bit of quirks to the golf course, especially as it firms up. The greens can be pretty challenging, and late in the day, it can get fairly bumpy, especially with the amount of pitch on these greens,” Scheffler admitted.

“So the greens were pretty difficult to putt and I kind of found myself on the wrong side of the hole a few times. But overall felt like I learned a good amount about the golf course today and excited to get out early tomorrow and see what I can do.”

Scheffler was then asked if he had any second thoughts about adding Napa to his schedule ahead of such a busy stretch.

“Any drawbacks? I couldn’t really think of one. I mean, you could maybe nit-pick and say you could use some rest, but like I said, it was more important for me to be here instead of having four weeks off before the Ryder Cup.”

Scheffler’s potential Ryder Cup partner

Scheffler has demonstrated his ability to play effectively with any Team USA member while maintaining his leadership. Ultimately, Keegan Bradley will make those decisions, and J.J. Spaun is a strong candidate to partner with Scheffler.

The pair is grouped with Russell Henley for the Procore Championship. While the world number one sits at T38 after the opening round, Spaun is off to a strong start at five under par in T7.

Scheffler could partner with anyone based on his experience alone, but recent form suggests Spaun might be his best fit right now.
