Golf has seen plenty of bad predictions over the years, but Phil Mickelson’s call on Scottie Scheffler in 2025 might end up being one of the most off-the-mark takes yet.
Scheffler picked up his fourth win of the PGA Tour season at The Open last weekend, which also happened to be his second major title of the year.
It only strengthens his position as world number one and adds more weight to the argument that he’s currently the best player in golf.
But while Scheffler continues to rack up wins, Mickelson has had to walk back a prediction that has not aged well at all.
Back in March, Mickelson made a bold claim that Scheffler wouldn’t win another event until after the Ryder Cup in September. That prediction did not last long.
The 55-year-old golfer has since owned up to just how far off he was with that prediction, and now Scheffler himself has had a chance to respond to those comments from ‘Lefty.’
Scottie Scheffler opens up on Phil Mickelson’s controversial tweet

Scottie Scheffler made an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast, where he took questions about the latest topics around golf.
Of course, one of the questions brought up was Mickelson’s prediction, giving Scheffler the opportunity to address it directly.

His reaction was more amused than anything else.
“I did see the tweet. It was a great tweet. I think that is what he was trying to say [that I won’t win anything all year] but you can’t say America is going to lose the Ryder Cup when you are an American, because Phil is not dumb, Phil is really smart,” Scheffler commented.
He went on to add: “But, yeah, it did not age very well which I am very pleased with!”
How Phil Mickelson’s prediction has held up since he made his Scottie Scheffler claim
Mickelson was certainly bold in his prediction, and while everyone’s entitled to their opinion, this one didn’t quite pan out.
| Event | Winning margin (strokes) |
| The CJ Cup Byron Nelson | 8 |
| PGA Championship | 5 |
| The Memorial | 4 |
| The Open | 4 |
In the end, he was miles off. Scheffler has gone on to win four PGA Tour events since then, including The Masters and The Open.
And, to be honest, he probably will not stop making bold calls any time soon. If nothing else, Mickelson always stands by what he says, even when it doesn’t pan out.
