Scottie Scheffler has opened up on what frustrated him most about his week at the Memorial Tournament after registering his worst finish at Muirfield Village since his very first appearance.

Scheffler had a turbulent week at the latest signature event on the PGA Tour. It looked entirely possible that the world number one may even miss the cut after stumbling out of the blocks.

It was surprising to see given that Scheffler had won the Memorial in both 2024 and 2025. But it is also fair to say that the 29-year-old has not been at his very best for much of the season.

Nevertheless, it was jarring to see just how angry Scheffler was getting, particularly after he found the water on the 16th hole on Thursday.

The early signs suggested that things may not improve for Scheffler on Friday. He was three over par for the day through 10 holes. But just when it appeared that he may be about to miss the cut, he started to get his act together.

Scheffler was eight under par for the remainder of the tournament. So perhaps it makes sense that he had mixed feelings when asked to sum up his week.

“Overall, I would say pretty frustrating, but the way I played the last two days I definitely feel a lot better with kind of where things are at than I did coming off the course on Friday. I guess I should say in the middle of the round Friday,” he said.

“I started hitting some good shots on the back nine Friday, and then I played decent the last couple days. I just wasn’t sharp enough to make the big move that I needed to make.”

He was then asked what frustrated him most about his performance at Muirfield Village.

“Just couldn’t really get anything going. It felt like when I was getting something going, like, yesterday was a good example, I made kind of a silly, not a silly, but I had a hard two-putt on 11. Three-putt and then I go to the next hole and I hit the shot in the back bunker, and then you just kind of know you have no chance from back there. Just little stuff like that. Then hit it in the hazard on 14 yesterday,” he said.

“Just little things, little mistakes that I don’t typically make, I felt like I was making this week. So a few things to clean up in the off week, but overall, I feel pretty comfortable with where my game’s at.”

What Scottie Scheffler learned after a practice round at Shinnecock ahead of the US Open

Scheffler has been nowhere near his best this season. And yet, he has still not finished outside the top 25 once on the PGA Tour in 2026.

He has to be considered one of the big favourites to win the US Open at Shinnecock later this month. Of course, it is the one major that Scheffler is yet to win.

Shinnecock promises to be a brutal test. And Scheffler was asked what he learned about the venue after recently visiting for a practice round.

“I would say definitely off the tee and some of the approach shots too. It’s one of those courses where there’s a ton of space out there, but the areas you have to hit into are quite small. So looking at like tee balls where some of them are somewhat blind and you’re kind of hitting over that like higher fescue type grass,” he said.

“Then going into some of the greens, the greens are going to play really small, especially if they get firm and it should be really challenging week.

It is easy to forget just how long it took for Scheffler’s 2025 season to kick into top gear.

He has not been quite the same player so far in 2026. However, that does not mean that Scheffler cannot still enjoy a phenomenal end to the season.
