How well Scottie Scheffler plays at Bethpage Black could play a big role in deciding the Ryder Cup later this month.

He’s been the standout player on the PGA Tour for a couple of years now, and the United States will be looking for him to lead by example once again.

His Ryder Cup record isn’t particularly strong, though, with two wins, two losses and three halved matches. Even so, he has clearly stepped up as a leader within the squad.

This week’s Procore Championship should give an early indication of how ready he is, and the same goes for his teammates.

Scottie Scheffler says

Scheffler said: “I think that probably would have been something I did differently if I could go back. Like this year… my schedule leading up to [the 2025 Ryder Cup] will be very different from how it was last year.”

While there’s still a long way to go before the tournament starts, it sounds like he’ll be approaching things differently this time around.

Scottie Scheffler opens up about pre-Ryder Cup mistake from 2023

Scheffler will arrive at Bethpage with plenty of rounds under his belt. That wasn’t the case two years ago when he played in the Ryder Cup in Rome.

Speaking to reporters, the Dallas native spoke about why playing in Napa is important for both him and his teammates:

“I think having to come here, having the opportunity to come here and play this tournament is really important. You can practice and prepare all you want at home, but there’s something different about playing tournament golf leading up. I felt like for myself going into the last Ryder Cup, my prep work may not have been as good as it should have been. I think I could have been a little bit sharper at that tournament.

“It’s just because it’s just different playing tournament golf, it really is. That was a learning experience for me. Like I said, I learned from it and now we’ll be pretty sharp heading in.”

Scheffler was then asked whether he was on board with playing Napa right away after being approached.

Scheffler responded: “Yeah, we had talked about it at the beginning of the year. It was something that Xander and I had discussed because sometimes we do kind of a prep work trip, but Bethpage was a golf course that most of us knew pretty well.
