Celtic and Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in Lawrence Shankland.

Rangers and Celtic have been linked with Lawrence Shankland in recent weeks.

According to The Daily Record, both Old Firm giants are watching the red-hot striker ahead of the January transfer window.

Problem is, Celtic and Rangers fans are refusing to read much into his exceptional goalscoring record – and it’s a fair argument.

After all, the Dundee United has scored a whopping 50 goals since the beginning of last season, including one on his Scotland debut against San Marino this past weekend.

But the vast majority of his goals have come in the Scottish Championship and, of course, the Hoops and Steven Gerrard’s side are top-flight sides.

Could he cut it in the Premiership? That’s the question, but comments from Scott McKenna offer an insight into his talent and, equally as important, his ambition.

McKenna said of his former Aberdeen team-mate: “He has left Aberdeen, worked hard and got his body into great condition and banged in the goals.

“He has [earned] his call-up and I don’t think he could have wished for his first start [for Scotland] to go any better. As Lawrence has done for most of his career is that he reacts first and puts the ball into the back of the net.”

McKenna is one of the best centre-backs in Scottish football, having been linked with a £10 million move away not too long ago, and his praise speaks volumes of the Celtic and Rangers-linked bagsman.

Shankland took the dreadful spell at Aberdeen on the chin, failing to score a single senior goal in four years, but simply hasn’t stopped scoring since, from League One, to the Championship and now at international level.

Not only is there goals there, but there’s clearly an enormous hunger and if – perhaps a big IF – he got a move to Ibrox or Parkhead, he may well be determined to make every second and every chance count.
