Neil Lennon’s Celtic failed to win against Hibernian on Sunday.
The former Celtic star, who is now on the books of Partick Thistle in the Scottish Premiership, made the comments following the Hoops’ goalless draw with Hibernian away from home at Easter Road in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.
The Glasgow giants struggled in front of goal during the match and failed to take the chances they created.
McDonald believes that Celtic need to sign a centre-forward in the summer transfer window, and the 35-year-old – who can operate as a striker or as an attacking midfielder – was also impressed with the visiting team’s goalkeeper Scott Bain’s save against Oli Shaw in the 86th minute.
McDonald told BBC Sport: “Celtic definitely need another centre-forward. They need a variation. They need an out and out number nine.”
McDonald added about Bain: “We’ve seen that time and again since he’s been in goals. It’s a fantastic save, he stretches himself so well. But it’s how quickly he got off the line and saw the danger.
“As soon as that header dropped he was there blocking it and making sure no one could get on the rebound. Really good play.”
