Scott McDonald has told BT Sport that Rangers have signed an ‘exceptional footballer’ in Steven Davis.

Davis returned to Rangers on a six-month loan from Southampton earlier this month.

The Northern Ireland international, who has over 100 caps, is getting on in years after turning 34 on New Year’s Day.

But the consensus is that Davis – who has over 300 Premier League appearances under his belt – could still be a major asset for the Gers, where he previously played until 2012.

The Ibrox outfit also signed Jermain Defoe on an 18-month loan from Bournemouth, and fomer Celtic hitman McDonald reveals that both will give the Premiership title challengers some ‘quality’.

“Steven Davis has been here and done it before,” he told BT Sports.

“He is an exceptional footballer, probably underrated in a lot of aspects and obviously Jermain Defoe coming in and adding that quality in front of goal.”

Both could make their debuts this weekend when Rangers visit Cowdenbeath in a Scottish Cup fourth-round game.
