Brendan Rodgers confirmed that Celtic are close to signing Ukrainian winger Maryan Shved.

Scott McDonald believes the transfer situation surrounding Celtic’s potential new signing Marian Shved is ‘a little bit strange’ following Brendan Rodgers comments on the player.

Rodgers all but confirmed to the Herald Scotland that the deal for the 21-year-old winger ‘should be done’, but he did admit that they ‘don’t need a winger now’ as he labelled him as a ‘development’ player.

Former Celtic man McDonald, who represented the Glasgow giants during the mid-noughties, commented on the club’s transfer situation and Rodgers’ comments.

“It’s a little bit strange, isn’t it?” McDonald told BT Sport. “If you’re talking about the Ukrainian boy [Shved], particularly. He already said before the game on Wednesday night that ‘it’s one for the future and wasn’t really something he was looking at’.”

Shved is currently plying his trade for Karpaty Lviv in Ukraine’s top-tier and he has been in sparkling form over the course of the season.

According to transfermarkt, he has played 18 matches in all competitions, scoring eight goals and supplying three assists for his side.

As reported by BBC Sport, Celtic have already signed a winger during the January transfer window with West Brom’s Oliver Burke joining the club on a loan deal.

The 21-year-old has not disappointed thus far, netting a brace on his Scottish Premiership debut when Rodgers side emphatically beat St Mirren on home soil.

Judging by Rodgers comments, it seems if the Shved deal does go through then the youngster will not be part of Celtic’s first team setup.

It remains to be seen what part he will play for the current Scottish Premiership leaders, not in the short term, but in the medium, to long term as Celtic aim to continue their dominance in Scotland.
