Rangers goalkeeper Robby McCrorie committed a huge error on Friday night.
Scotland Under-21 boss Scott Gemmill has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Rangers goalkeeper Ross McCrorie will respond well to his mistake against Ukraine.
Scotland Under-21’s needed a win when they travelled to Kiev on Friday, and it all started so well as Lewis Morgan scored inside the first minute of the game from close range.
However, that’s about as good as it got for Scotland, as Oleksandr Zubkov brought Ukraine level with a deflected strike in the first half, before Ukraine put Scotland out of sight in the second half.
Zubkov’s long-range shot was fumbled into his own net by McCrorie, and Shakhtar Donetsk talent Viktor Kovalenko added a third late on.
That defeat means that Scotland won’t be heading to the Under-21 European Championships in 2019, and much of the blame has been placed on goalkeeper McCrorie.
The Rangers talent is looking to break through at Ibrox, but his handling of Zubkov’s shot was poor, as he misread the trajectory of the ball and could only parry it over his own head and into his own net.
Now, Scotland Under-21 boss Gemmill has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks McCrorie will bounce back well, backing him to handle everything maturely and get back to his best, as mistakes being magnified is just the life of a goalkeeper.
“It’s the life of a goalie isn’t it? He’s handled it before and reacted in the right manner,” said Gemmill. “You have to remember how important he has been for us. At Under-17s, 19s and 21s he’s made some big saves. Against France at the Toulon Tournament and Holland away in the last game he was good for us. There’s no doubt he will be able to handle it maturely,” he added.
