Brown is in the final 12 months of his contract at Celtic.
Celtic captain Scott Brown has told STV that he is expecting to sign a new deal in the coming weeks with the Scottish champions as he continues to shine as Hoops skipper – but his new deal is surely another reason for a teammate to leave.
Brown has got better with age and at 33 years of age, he is becoming Celtic’s fine wine. Lacking the pace he did a few years ago, his footballing intelligence and fan-favourite status sees him remain one of the club’s most important players.
Now in the final 12 months of his £25,000-a-week contract (Daily Star), Brendan Rodgers has moved to offer the former Hibernian midfielder a new deal which could see his wages increase.
He told STV: “Me and the club we are speaking. There is no problem between myself and the club. They know i’m going to sign. There is no issues whatsoever. It’s just a matter of time for us to get it done.
“We first started talking just before international break. It will be done in next couple of weeks hopefully. I still feel I’ve got a good few years left in me. That will be part of the discussion. I think two or three years easily. I feel fit and I feel good.”
With Brown expecting to remain at Celtic until even 2021, the likelihood of Kouassi Eboue making a name for himself at Celtic is diminishing by the second.
A £3million signing from Russian side Krasnodar, Eboue was supposed to be Brown’s long-term successor. But since joining in January 2017, he has managed just 19 appearances – only two this season.
The Daily Record claimed on deadline day that Rodgers had told Ivory Coast star Eboue he could leave Celtic, but he failed to secure a move late on in the window.
Eboue has three years left on his £1,200-a-week deal (Daily Star), but his paper-thin chances of earning a more regular place as Brown’s back-up or indeed alongside the Celtic captain are now zero, with Brown set to sign a new contract.
