In comments reported by Sky Sports, Scott Brown has seemingly thrown his support behind Neil Lennon getting the Celtic job on a permanent basis by insisting that he hopes the Hoops boss is around for a long time.

Lennon is currently set to be in charge of the Bhoys for the rest of the season after stepping in in the wake of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. He looks to be on course to deliver another domestic Treble, with Celtic winning three and drawing one of his opening four games in charge.

This Sunday’s Old Firm game is perhaps a pivotal one for Lennon. With Rodgers leaving the club in a commanding position, the interim boss was always going to struggle to go above and beyond before the end of the campaign – but beating Rangers would surely help his cause.

And so will having the support of the key players in the Celtic dressing room. And one man who needs no convincing about who the manager should be next season is Brown, who opened up about Lennon’s future.

Celtic's new interim manager Neil Lennon is unveiled with his assistant John Kennedy at Celtic Park on February 27, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Brendan’s left and we don’t want to forget what he did for this club. He was fantastic but now it’s Neil’s chance to do the exact same thing and we’re looking forward to having Neil here for a long time,” he said, as reported by Sky Sports.

“He was here before and it was three great seasons. Here’s hoping there’s a lot more.”

Lennon appears to have some work to do before he wins all of the fans over. While he remains an incredibly popular figure, there are some who are concerned that he may taint his legacy with the club slightly if he stays on – they have needed stoppage-time goals to beat Hearts and Dundee since his return.

The fans’ concerns cannot be ignored if enough of them are worried. But the Celtic hierarchy will surely take a lot of confidence from what the players feel about the idea of Lennon staying, especially if he can shut the door on the Gers’ slim title hopes this weekend.
