Scott Brown has told The Scottish Sun that he is ‘gutted’ for David Turnbull after his Celtic dream went up in smoke.

The 19-year-old Motherwell midfielder looked set to join the Hoops in a £3.25 million deal this week.

But during his medical, Celtic revealed a knee injury that is set to sideline Turnbull for potentially six months [The Scottish Sun].

Turnbull had already met Brown and manager Neil Lennon at Lennoxtown ahead of the long-awaited switch, and although the Celtic captain is saddened by the collapsed transfer, he’s hopeful that a move can still happen at some point in the future.

He told The Scottish Sun: “I’m gutted for David. I met him at the training ground and know he was looking forward to coming. He seems a great lad.

“Hopefully he’ll keep developing and it could happen for him in the future. But you’ve got to feel for the lad, especially after the clubs agreed the deal.”

It really is a bitter blow for Turnbull and Celtic fans, to their credit, have been class in sending their sympathies to the young man on Twitter.

January is now the earliest time that the Hoops will realistically make the deal, but even then it might not be that realistic if he’s going to miss the rest of this calendar year with the same knee problem.

He scored 15 goals in 30 Premiership appearances from midfield last term.
