Speaking to the Daily Mail, Celtic captain Scott Brown has backed Leigh Griffiths to earn back his place in the team this season.

The Scotland striker was in sensational form for the Hoops last season, scoring 40 goals in all competitions.

He started this campaign in fine form, too, with several goals in the early weeks to help his side reach the Champions League group stages.

An injury picked up in the 4-1 win over Aberdeen saw him spend a period on the touchline, though, and since then Moussa Dembele has impressed in his absence, including netting a hat trick in the Old Firm derby win over Rangers.

It leaves the Frenchman as the first choice at this moment in time but his captain has backed Griffiths to earn his place back.

“If Griff plays regularly he will score you 40 goals a season and he will get his chance again,” he told the Daily Mail.

“The wee man is fine, his head will be in a good place because he knows he will be back in playing again and once he gets his chance I’m sure he’ll take it.”

The striker situation is certainly an interesting one at Celtic and a problem that Brendan Rodgers will be glad to have.

The pair have managed 21 goals between them in all competitions this season, a strike record that many clubs would wish they could boast.

At this moment in time, it seems unlikely that Rodgers will bring Griffiths back into the team though with Dembele impressing in both domestic and European football.

As well as that his team is faring well in Griffiths’ absence, sitting top of the league, into a League Cup semi-final and with an outside chance in Europe, and that may see the striker have to wait for his chance to impress again.
