Scott Bain would have surprised many with his performance on his Celtic debut at the weekend.
There has been something very last-minute about Scott Bain’s very brief Celtic career so far. The goalkeeper moved to Parkhead on transfer deadline day in January after a late injury sustained by Craig Gordon, and he told the Hoops’ official website in the wake of the Old Firm win at the weekend that he only found out that he was making his debut four hours before kick-off.
And of course, one of the defining images to emerge from the game was the sight of Bain clutching onto the ball on the goal line in the final minutes at Ibrox after Alfredo Morelos had somehow hit the post from a couple of yards out as Rangers searched for an equaliser.
The last-minute nature of Bain’s Celtic career to date makes his display in the win over Graeme Murty’s men all the more impressive. The 26-year-old produced some fantastic saves and looked so assured when dealing with crosses that few would have suspected that he had not played for his new club heading into Sunday.
Dorus De Vries had performed at a decent level before he sustained the injury that ruled him out of the Old Firm game, but there is surely no way that Rodgers could justify bringing him back in if Bain maintains his form.
And Craig Gordon similarly should not expect to come back into the side when he returns to full fitness if Bain continues to perform at that level that Celtic fans saw at the weekend.
Everything notable about Bain’s Celtic spell has been whirlwind, and it appears that in the blink of an eye, the Dundee-owned stopper should now be considered Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper.
