Scott Bain can really push Craig Gordon as Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Celtic’s Craig Gordon could now be sitting behind Rangers star Allan McGregor in the Scotland pecking order – and at both domestic and international levels, he should be looking over his shoulder at Scott Bain.
Gordon has been a consistent stopper for Celtic since his 2014 move, but is now approaching 36, and his days as first-choice for club and country may be coming to an end.
The veteran has been a regular under Brendan Rodgers but did miss Celtic’s last game before the international break, with Bain starting in the 0-0 draw at Livingston.
Bain, who also started the Scottish Cup semi-final against Hearts, was then called into the Scotland squad offering cover behind McGregor and Jamie MacDonald.
Bain couldn’t build on his one cap for Scotland, but at 27 years of age, it’s now time for him to be really pushing Gordon for the jersey at Celtic.
After the draw at Livingston, some Celtic fans felt that Bain is now better than Gordon after some wobbles earlier this season, and Bain should be looking to use his call-up to really kick on and make himself undroppable for Rodgers.
The goalkeeper – signed in a bargain free transfer move over the summer – has seen Ryan Christie do exactly that in the Celtic midfield, and he can follow his lead in goal.
If there isn’t a clear progression for Bain by the end of the season, he may feel that he needs to go out and play games elsewhere, as somebody has to step in for veterans Gordon and McGregor for Scotland down the line – and Bain would be the favourite if he is starring somewhere, with Celtic surely seeing him as Gordon’s heir right now.
