Scottish Premiership side Glasgow Rangers signed Scott Arfield, and he says an experience at Ibrox left an impression on him and his ex-Burnley team-mates.
Scott Arfield was named as Rangers’ first signing in the Steven Gerrard era earlier today.
The former Burnley midfielder leaves the Clarets after five years at Turf Moor, netting 21 goals in 177 league outings.
The Scotland-born star already has the experience of playing at Ibrox following a three-year spell with Falkirk until 2010, but Arfield also faced Rangers away in a pre-season friendly three years ago.
Sean Dyche’s side travelled North of the border in July of 2015 and left with a 1-0, with some 22,000 home fans in attendance, and Arfield claims that experience ‘whetted’ his appetite for Ibrox.
He told the Gers’ official website today: “I remember the pre-season game that I managed to score in and the boys came off the bus and before the final whistle there was 22,000 in a pre-season game.
“I remember getting back on the bus after the game and the boys down there don;t know anything like it. It is normally 200 people at a pre-season game and nobody really cares but up here it is completely different.
“That whetted my appetite to come back up the road and thankfully, three years later, I’m back here sat in this chair.”
It’ll be interesting to see where Gerrard intends on playing Arfield, for the 29-year-old can play central midfield and a wide role.
If Rangers wind up signing Jamie Murphy on a permanent transfer then logically it’ll be a midfield role for the Canada international, given how brilliant Murphy was on the left-hand side of the Gers’ attack since arriving on loan in January.
