Derek McInnes has told The Scottish Sun that he did not want Scott Wright to join Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in the January transfer window.

Rangers signed Wright from Aberdeen in the January transfer window. The Gers had initially agreed a pre-contract with the 23-year-old winger, and then paid their Scottish Premiership rivals £200,000 in transfer fees to bring the deal forward, as reported by The Daily Record.

McInnes was in charge of Aberdeen at the time, and the Scotsman, who parted company with the Dons in March, has said that he did not want the winger to move to Rangers in the middle of the season.

The Scotsman has added that he believes that Wright will be a success at Rangers.

McInnes told The Scottish Sun about Wright: “Getting that move in January was really good for Scott and Rangers. They come back into European competition pretty quickly in the summer, so there will be a benefit from that settling-in period.

“You see a lot of the big clubs making signings in January that aren’t necessarily for the here and now — it’s to be fully ready for the next campaign. I wanted Scott to be part of my team for the rest of the season, because I could see his speed and creativity would help us.

“But he went to Rangers in the January window and I think he has gone there with a real purpose to impress right away. I know Stevie has been really pleased with his attitude and how he’s approached it. He’s working with good people there.”

Succeeding at Rangers

Wright is a very talented and promising young winger who has a bright future ahead of him.

The 23-year-old Scottish winger has made five substitute appearances in the Scottish Premiership and played 15 minutes in the Europa League for Rangers this season, according to WhoScored.

The youngster could establish himself as a key player in the Rangers team next season.
