Dundee United striker Lawrence Shankland has confirmed that he’s held talks with the Tannadice side over an extension to his contract – but admits he’s not in any rush to sign a new deal with the Arabs.

Shankland, a one-time target for Rangers and Celtic, is out of contract in 12 months time and insists he’s happy at Tannadice but is looking to use the next six months to potentially win a move elsewhere.

United were looking to cash in on the striker this summer but a lack of acceptable bids have left them potentially losing him for free – although the Tannadice side will hope a new deal will land them a payday down the line.

“From a selfish point of view, I will be in a good position if I have a good six months at the start of the season,” Shankland said, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.

“I am not going to say I am going to jump in right away and then sign a new deal.

“I think it is something you need to look at, but you need to look at all your options and that is something I will do.

“There have been talks between the club and my representatives, but it is the kind of stuff that takes care of itself in time and we will see what happens.

“I have still got a year left on my contract and I am in a good position, so I am more than happy to be here, as I have been.”

Scotland international has slipped from the limelight recently

After a decent-if-unspectacular season last term, Shankland’s star has faded a little with Kevin Nisbet taking his mantle.

A strong season at Tannadice would really help him secure a move away – although it likely won’t endear him to fans too much.

However, his goal return has continued to be ok for the Arabs but he’ll need to hit more than the 9 he netted last season if he is to catch the eye.
