The Liverpool full-back played in the disappointing Word Cup qualifier for his country.
When Liverpool signed Andy Robertson from Hull City for a cut-price fee in the summer, it was hailed as a smart piece of business by those who had watched the Scottish defender develop at the Tigers.
Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, he has struggled for game time in his early months at Anfield, featuring just three times in all competitions and being omitted from the match day squad for five of Liverpool’s seven Premier League matches to date.
The resurgence of Alberto Moreno has played its part, and while the Spaniard still has his critics, Robertson will know he has to seize every opportunity that comes his way in the months ahead.
In Scotland’s World Cup qualifier away to Slovenia on Sunday, the Liverpool left-back played in his natural position, with Celtic’s Kieran Tierney switched to the opposite flank, and that decision in itself prompted plenty of debate among the Tartan Army.
Robertson did his best on the night but his lack of match action showed, while two sloppy girls conceded at vital points in the second half ensured Scotland could only draw 2-2 and kiss their World Cup hopes goodbye for another four years.
Robertson has what it takes to be Liverpool’s first-choice left-back for years to come, but he has a way to go before he has the full confidence of Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.
For now he needs to settle in his new surroundings, perform when he gets the chance and hope to ultimately become one of the first names on the team sheet.
